![]() ![]() The Spirit would enable the apostles to testify of Jesus Christ as well (verse 27). He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.” Jesus said the Holy Spirit would come “testify of ” (John 15:26). Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. We can also read what the Holy Spirit wrote in John 1:32-34 to confirm Jesus’ Messiahship.įurthermore, John 16:12-14 says: “ I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. In the coming years, while the so-called “New Testament” Scriptures were written, the Holy Spirit bore record that Jesus was Messiah. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.” The Holy Spirit enabled John to bear record of Jesus as Christ/Messiah. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. Consider John 1:32-34: “ And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. The Holy Spirit bore record that Jesus is God’s Son, Christ/Messiah. Then, Father God declared, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). Once Jesus was water baptized, the Spirit of God descended like a dove and lighted upon Him. Jesus fulfilled the various Old Testament prophecies that Messiah was expected to come and fulfill one day (Luke 24:44-48 Acts 3:18 Acts 13:26-41 et al.). The Word of God written by the Spirit of God (2 Peter 1:21) proves that Jesus is Christ/Messiah, the Son of God. This “Spirit” is obviously the Holy Spirit. “And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one” (1 John 5:8). In contrast to the three members of the Godhead who bear record in heaven (1 John 5:7 in the King James Bible), there are three that bear record in earth (verse 8). Furthermore, there are three elements or witnesses that bear record of: (1) God giving of His Son Jesus Christ, and (2) eternal life is found in Jesus Christ. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” The testimony (or “record”) is twofold: (1) God gave of His Son, Jesus Christ, and (2) eternal life is in Jesus Christ. The record/testimony/witness/report is in verses 10 and 11: “ He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. Verse 9: “witness” x3 ( marturia x3)-nounsįor simplicity’s sake, we will say this to summarize.Verse 8: “bear witness” ( martureo)-verb.Verse 7: “bear record” ( martureo)-verb.Verse 6: “beareth witness” ( martureo)-verb. ![]() The idea that stands out in the above passage is “bearing witness,” “bearing record,” and “testifying.” In Greek, these all are nearly the same word. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. ![]() And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. We read in 1 John chapter 5: “ This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ not by water only, but by water and blood. There are three that bear witness in earth- “the Spirit, and the water, and the blood.” Scripture says these three “agree in one.” Exactly on what do they agree? The key to understanding this verse is to look at the context. CAN YOU EXPLAIN 1 JOHN 5:8- “THE SPIRIT, THE WATER, AND THE BLOOD?” ![]()
